Alcohol and Cannabis (or more popularly known as Marijuana) have both remained a true companion of the human race from the beginning of time. Both have remained a true and silent companion of our good as well as bad times – much like a true friend. However, both of these friendly companions tend to leave a bad impact for the humans health if consumed for a long term basis.
With the growing industrialization era and modernization, somehow alcohol found its way into our life with a license plate in its name. Drinking alcohol somehow became normal, and didn’t cause a raised eyebrow in the society. Though still considered as a vice, yet consuming alcohol seemed to be a better and safer choice than consuming in cannabis/ marijuana. Marijuana is still a hush-hush secret of many and the society. Even though, in the present scenario cannabis/marijuana has trended to be in a part of the youth culture, yet still it hasn’t found its place in the licensed register. One main reason for this that people assuming that alcohol is a safer choice than cannabis. However, the truth is just the opposite.
The recent research and studies tells us that Alcohol is more harmful to brain than cannabis. Scientists at University of Colorado Boulder conducted a study of the existing imaging of data which looked into the effects of alcohol and cannabis/marijuana on the brain. The study gives away to the fact that consumption of alcohol leads to changes in the structure of the grey and white matter in the brain. On the other hand, the use marijuana seemed to have no significant long term effect on the brain. Researchers have also said that cannabinoids – which are active compounds, found in marijuana, can help in preventing migraine and even used for increased sex drive. While marijuana, still have many adverse effects however, studies prove that alcohol, more harmful than cannabis.
Unlike marijuana, boozing affects the grey and white matter of the brain – which are responsible for the brain function and communication respectively. Researchers add that cannabis effects are highly limited. Many thoughts are already given in to make marijuana legal. Surveys say that in US, 44% of those who are over 12 years of age have used marijuana at some point in their lives. Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska, Colorado are the five US states which have already legalised cannabis for medicinal and recreational use.
While alcohol is reducing people’s white and grey matter in the brain, Marijuana on the other hand reduces the risk of epileptic fit by nearly 50%! This result comes from a research that has been carried on last month, which says that, a certain drug deprived from cannabis reduces certain epilepsy patients’ risk of fits by 50%. Also the drug named Epidiolex, contains cannabidiol which holds a range of medicinal benefits and helps people suffering from migraines, psoriasis, acne and depression.
However, it must be remembered that extensive research on cannabis are still in process and it can still prove to be harmful if consumed on regular basis or on large amount. Hence, the consumption of cannabis should be regulated, and next time you pick up a glass for alcohol, remember that having a drag of marijuana will rather be harmless. Remember, alcohol is more harmful than cannabis.
